Steam Machine, or the box you'd build for the money
Valve's Steam Machine landed in Australia at $1,609. I priced a cheaper build, a like-for-like one, and a higher-end one against it — and thanks to the RAM crisis, the usual just-build-one answer isn't the walkover it normally is.
Valve’s Steam Machine went on sale in Australia on 30 June at $1,609 for the 512GB model, and the question wrote itself: for that money, wouldn’t you just build a PC? I’ve answered that question the same way for fifteen years — yes, obviously, build one — so I went to do it again, properly, with live Mwave and Centrecom prices instead of vibes.
The answer came back less obvious than usual, and it’s worth saying why up front. We’re mid-RAMpocalypse: AI datacentre demand has gutted DRAM and NAND supply, and a 32GB DDR5-6000 kit that sold for about $150 a year ago is $550 to $600 today. Valve built the Steam Machine at cost during that same squeeze, which means the sticker is genuinely hard to undercut. So this isn’t the tidy DIY victory lap I expected. It’s three real options — a cheaper box, a like-for-like box, and a properly quicker box — and a Steam Machine that earns its place in a way the 2015 ones never did.
What $1,609 actually gets you
Start with the spec, because the price hides it. Under the ~155mm cube is a semi-custom AMD chip: a 6-core, 12-thread Zen 4 CPU limited to 30W, and an RDNA3 GPU with 28 compute units and 8GB of GDDR6, drawing 110W. GamersNexus put a retail unit on the bench and landed it alongside a Radeon RX 6600 or an RTX 3060 — a notch below a full desktop RX 7600, which runs 32 CUs at 165W. Digital Foundry were blunter still: it loses to a base PS5, by up to 17% in the titles they tested.
That’s not a criticism so much as a calibration. Valve marketed “4K 60 with FSR” and, when the reviews landed, quietly changed the store page to the softer “up to 4K gaming with FSR 4.1.” The honest translation is that it renders internally at around 1080p and upscales to your 4K telly. Which is completely fine — that’s what a PS5 does too — as long as you buy it knowing that’s the machine, not a 4K native one.
One line item the $1,609 doesn’t include: a controller. The new Steam Controller is a separate $149, and a console you drive from the couch isn’t really a console without one. There are bundle SKUs — $1,728 gets you the 512GB machine with the controller in the box — and that’s the number I’ll use whenever I’m comparing it as a living-room device, because that’s what it costs to actually use it as one. Worth knowing too: Valve underestimated demand and standalone controller orders placed now “may not be delivered until 2027,” so the bundle isn’t just cheaper, it’s the only way to get one on day one.
Cheaper, same, or more
Here’s where the RAM crisis reshapes everything. I priced three complete AM5 builds — new parts, self-assembled, everything checked live on 3 July against Mwave, Centrecom, PC Case Gear and the staticice aggregator. Prices exclude a Windows licence and your Saturday afternoon.
Each component links to the retailer — or the price-comparison listing — I took its figure from on 3 July: Centrecom and PC Case Gear for the parts I could confirm on a live page, staticice for the ones I priced across stores. So the links and the dollars line up. Mwave, the usual one-stop shop, sat higher on most of these the day I checked (its RAM especially), which is the whole reason the totals pay to shop around. The cheaper one — the box that tries to undercut the Steam Machine and keep its 8GB compromise:

Look at that total. It’s the same money as the Steam Machine, for a box that shares its single worst trait — 8GB of VRAM — and hands you a mid-tower and an afternoon of assembly instead of a cube that just works. The only way this build gets genuinely under $1,609 is a used GPU (a second-hand RX 7600 or 6650 runs roughly $250–320), which drops it to about $1,450. That’s the actual budget play, and it comes with no warranty and someone else’s coil whine.
The like-for-like one — same money, but spent on the thing that matters:

For $120 more than the cheaper build — and about $126 over the bare Steam Machine, or $7 over the Steam Machine-with-controller bundle — you get a current-generation RDNA4 card with double the VRAM and roughly 50% more grunt. That $120 is the single best-spent money in this entire post, and it’s the reason the “cheaper” build above barely makes sense: nobody should buy 8GB in 2026 to save a hundred bucks.
The step up — the next tier that’s actually a tier:

Which brings me to the breakpoint question, because I went looking for where the next meaningful jump actually sits, and the GPU stack answers it cleanly. Nothing worth buying lives between the RX 9060 XT 16GB at ~$500 and the RX 9070 at ~$800. There’s a dead zone. If you spend between $1,735 and about $2,400, you’re not buying more frames — you’re just buying more RAM and storage bolted to the same GPU. The next real step is the RX 9070, and by the time you’ve paired it with the 32GB the tier deserves (thank you, RAMpocalypse), you’re at ~$2,437. So the honest tiers aren’t $1,600 / $2,200 / $2,800. They’re ~$1,600 and then ~$2,450, with a dead patch in between.
The clustering is the story. Four of these six options sit within $130 of each other around the $1,600–1,735 mark — the Steam Machine, its controller bundle, the 8GB build and the 16GB build are all fighting over the same hundred dollars. Then there’s a gap, the 2TB Steam Machine at $2,228, and the step-up build that outclasses it on everything but storage for $239 more.
The frames
I put the numbers on a chart at 1080p, because that’s the resolution the Steam Machine actually renders at internally — so it’s the fairest common ground. The Steam Machine figures are GamersNexus’s measured results from a retail unit. The build figures are estimates, scaled from published RDNA4 review deltas, so treat them as directional rather than lab-exact.
The shape is roughly 60% more frames from the like-for-like build and a bit over double from the step-up. And the Steam Machine’s column is doing something quiet but important: in Oblivion Remastered it’s at 27fps, in Black Myth at 44 — these are demanding 2026 titles where it’s already leaning on FSR to reach a smooth number, and where “High” is doing work that used to say “Ultra.” It’s a locked-60 machine in older and lighter games; in the heavy new stuff it’s an upscale-and- compromise machine. The build sits comfortably above 60 native in the same scenes, and the step-up build does it at 1440p with headroom to spare.
Directional, not a review. The Steam Machine bars are measured (GamersNexus); the build bars are scaled estimates and will move with driver, scene and settings. Don’t treat any single cell as a benchmark — treat the gap as the point. Verify against live reviews before you spend.
Then there’s the 8GB question, which is less about today’s average frame rate and more about which games will simply refuse to behave. This isn’t hypothetical any more. Indiana Jones and the Great Circle won’t hold textures above Medium on an 8GB card and posts unplayable numbers at 1440p — the developers shipped a patch specifically to stop it falling over. Horizon Forbidden West on an 8GB card drops to 1%-low frame rates around 18fps where the same GPU with 16GB sits near 100. It’s not a subtle tax; it’s the difference between a game running and a game stuttering. Both the Steam Machine and the cheaper build wear that ceiling. The 16GB builds don’t. To be fair to 8GB, plenty of games — Space Marine 2, most esports titles — stay well under the limit and run beautifully. But the trend line only points one way, and you can’t add VRAM to a sealed cube.
The sealed box
That word — sealed — is the whole longevity argument, so let me put a number on it. The Steam Machine is soldered and closed: what you buy is what it is, for as long as you own it. Every part of the build is a part you can swap. When the RAM market normalises, the build owner drops in a cheap 32GB kit. When the GPU falls behind in three years, they spend $500-odd and they’re current again. The Steam Machine owner’s only path to “current” is to buy the whole machine a second time.
The step-up build starts most expensive and is the cheapest of the three to live with, because it doesn’t need touching for years. The like-for-like build absorbs one mid-life GPU upgrade and stays current for less than the Steam Machine costs to replace. And the Steam Machine, the cheapest to walk out the door with, becomes the dearest the day you want more than it launched with — because there is no “more,” only “again.”
This one’s a projection, not a fact. It assumes a ~$550 GPU refresh in year three and a full Steam Machine re-buy in year four to match it — both my guesses about future prices and your patience. If you’re happy to let a machine age in place, you spend nothing more on either, and the difference collapses to a simpler truth: the 8GB sealed box hits its ceiling first.
Where the Steam Machine earns it
If I only told you the build wins on frames, VRAM and upgrades, I’d have written a spec sheet, not an argument — because the Steam Machine isn’t trying to win a benchmark. It’s selling a different thing, and it sells it well.
It’s a 2.6kg cube the size of a large coffee mug, with the power supply inside, that sits under a telly without announcing itself. GamersNexus measured it at around 20 dBA under load — genuinely near-silent, the kind of quiet a mesh mid-tower with a 9070 in it does not do. You plug it in, set your timezone, sign into Steam, and you’re playing; the reviewer comparison was “faster to set up than a Switch 2,” and there’s no Windows, no driver install, no BIOS update, no GPU sag, no cable you forgot to plug in. It boots straight into a controller-first Big Picture interface built for the couch, pairs up to four controllers off an internal radio, and syncs your saves with a Steam Deck. It draws about 175W gaming where the build pulls three to four hundred. It comes with one warranty and one phone number when something breaks, and nothing to get wrong at assembly because there is no assembly.
And — this is the part I didn’t expect to be typing — it’s priced honestly. Valve shipped it at cost through the worst memory market in a decade, which is exactly why the cheaper build can’t meaningfully beat it. For someone who wants a console that happens to run the Steam library, who is never going to sit at a desk or open a side panel, that combination is the entire point, and no amount of “but the frames” touches it.
The honest asterisks, because a fair case keeps them in view: that 8GB ceiling still applies, the controller is $149 on top and may not arrive until 2027 if you don’t grab a bundle, the base 512GB is three or four modern installs before it’s full, launch stock is going out by a randomised reservation draw rather than an open sale, and — the sharp one — kernel-level anti-cheat doesn’t run on SteamOS, so Valorant, League of Legends, Fortnite and Rust simply don’t launch. For some households that last one is the whole decision, one way or the other.
Which one
If the machine lives under a television and gets driven by a controller by someone who never wants to see a terminal, buy the Steam Machine, buy the bundle with the controller, and don’t look back — it’s the best version of that idea Valve has ever shipped, and the cheaper build doesn’t undercut it enough to matter. If you’ll sit at a desk, want the frames, care about 1440p, or plan to keep the thing current for more than a console generation, build the like-for-like box: same money as the Steam Machine with a controller, double the VRAM, half a generation newer, and every part replaceable. And if the budget flexes to ~$2,450, the step-up build is a genuinely different class of machine that’ll stay relevant long after the other two have been asked to turn their textures down.
What changed my usual answer isn’t that the build stopped winning on performance — it wins comfortably, and it isn’t close in the games that lean on VRAM. What changed is that the RAM crisis squeezed the bottom of the market until the Steam Machine’s convenience stopped costing a premium. For once, the console-shaped option isn’t the lazy choice. It’s just a choice.
